IN BRAZIL, 44.3% OF HOUSEHOLDS HAVE AT LEAST ONE DOG AND 17.7%, ONE CAT
A survey conducted by the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP) and commissioned by the manufacturer of animal feed Mars Brazil drew the behavior profile of pet owners and pointed out the main differences between dog and cat owners. In Brazil, 44.3% of the 65 million households have at least one dog and 17.7% have at least one cat, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Currently, there are a total of 52.2 million dogs and 22.1 million cats in the country.
DOGS
Dog owners are mostly (51%) married. Dog owners are, on average, 41 years old, and 93% live with more than one person. 82% of dog owners are in the AB class (24% in the A class); 59% live in houses. 24% adopted their dogs, with 59% mixed-breed dogs. 44% see their dogs as children - most holding this opinion are single women up to 40 years old. 64% of interviewees let their dogs sleep indoors.
CATS
61% of cat owners are women. 48% believe that felines understand the mood of their owners. 45% see their cats as their children - most holding this opinion are single women up to 40 years old. Pet owners take their pets to the veterinarian less often - an average of 2.3 times a year, compared to 2.8 for dog owners. Cat owners are 40 years old in average, and 62% live in houses.

The Brazilian pet industry was responsible for a turnover of over BRL 18.9 billion in 2016, a growth of 4.9% over 2015, and the global third place in the world market, just behind the United States and the United Kingdom. In 2017, World Pet Market sales were US$ 119.5 billion, surpassing 2016 revenues of US$ 105.3 billion. The countries with the largest share in this turnover are; United States 41.0% - United Kingdom 5.3% - Brazil 5.1% - Germany 5.1% - France 4.7% - Japan 4.4% - Italy 3.2% - Russia 2.8% - China 2.6% - Australia 2.6% - Other 23.4%.

In 2017, Pet market turnover was BRL 20.3 billion, surpassing the 2016's revenue of BRL 18.9 billion. The results of this revenue is divided into four segments; PET FOOD 68.6% - PET SERV 15.8% - PET CARE 7.9% - PET VET 7.7%.
